Living in Barnegat
The city of Barnegat got its name from the nearby Barnegat Bay and Barnegat Inlet. It comes from the Dutch word, “barendegat,” meaning “inlet of the breakers” because of the channel’s turbulent waters. Before the Dutch settlers first explored the area in 1614, the Lenape Native American Tribe made annual summer trips to Barnegat’s shores to collect and roast clams.
Today, Barnegat is a major state and county highway hub, making it ideal for commuters heading to Trenton, Burlington and Philadelphia.
Families and couples who enjoy an active lifestyle outdoors will enjoy the wonderful beaches near Barnegat. The Barnegat Lighthouse State Park offers walking and biking trails, an interpretive center, the Barnegat Lighthouse, fishing, birdwatching and picnicking.
Barnegat’s coastline also offers parasailing, boat tours and sport fishing. More things to do in the area can be found on the town’s website
