Overview

Situated about 30 miles south of Atlanta, its population was 22,084 at the 2010 census. The town was named for naval officer Commodore Thomas Macdonough and founded in 1823. There is a traditional town square design, with historic buildings surrounding the square still intact. The county courthouse and historic jail are on the north side near the Welcome Center in an historically maintained Standard Oil service station that was built in 1920. The station also houses the Main Street Program Office and Hospitality and Tourism Office.

Trivia

Within a year of its creation, Henry County/McDonough was broken up to form all or parts of 8 different counties.
