Welcome to Maryland
From the cascading waterfalls to rocky-mountain terrain, rolling farm hills and white-sandy beaches, with such a wide-variety of terrain, it’s no wonder Maryland is often referred to as “America in Miniature.”
Maryland is a state filled with national “firsts.” The United States Naval Academy was founded in Annapolis on October 10, 1845. The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore employed the first female professor of medicine in 1901. It’s also home to the country’s first railroad station, first umbrella factory, first telegraph line and first dental school.
Maryland leads the nation in blue crab production, and residents were ranked as some of the nation’s happiest. Perhaps it has something to do with the herds of majestic feral ponies on the famous Assateague Island.
