While there are even more opportunities closer to home, the Francis Marion National Forest is a point of pride in the area. It’s just about 30 minutes from Georgetown, which is more than worth it for everything the national forest has to offer. This large, protected pine forest and marsh area spans about 260,000 acres. You can enjoy the natural beauty in many ways, like hiking, mountain biking, boating, canoeing, off-roading in designated areas, horseback riding, camping, and even during target practice at the forest’s rifle range. One of the most popular trails at Francis Marion National Forest is the Palmetto Trail, a cross-state, 500-mile hiking and backpacking trail. Over 50 miles of the Palmetto Trail pass through the Francis Marion National Forest. Of this more than 50-mile stretch of trail, all portions allow biking, and about 47 miles allows horseback riding.
