The city is a peaceful retreat to come home to, with numerous parks, trails, rivers, and mountain views, as well as shops, restaurants, and art and history activities.

Each July 4th, the town puts on a big fireworks show, and in August, the Page County Agricultural and Industrial Fair showcases local livestock, farm products, and entertainment.

Luray also has food-centered activities and restaurants to explore throughout the year thanks to the area’s local farms and culinary talent. Farm-to-Table dinner events highlight just that, with courses of farm-fresh ingredients cooked by local chefs. These special dinners can be found through local restaurants or hotels, or you can visit any of the area’s restaurants that source meat and produce locally. The town’s restaurants include everything from local diners and BBQ spots to bistros and chop houses; to places that specialize in cuisines such as Italian, Mexican, and Chinese; to white table cloth restaurants that source ingredients locally as well as internationally.

Outdoor fun in Luray, Virginia

Luray and the surrounding area has a love for outdoor recreation thanks to the beautiful scenery offered by the area’s natural landscape. Luray is less than 10 miles from the Thornton Gap Entrance Station of Shenandoah National Park, which has more than 500 miles of hiking trails to choose from, including a 101-mile stretch of the Appalachian Trail. For a shorter walk, right in town, residents can take a stroll along Luray’s Hawksbill Greenway, a two-mile, handicap accessible, paved walking and biking trail surrounded by wildlife. This trail also provides access to the Ruffner Plaza and Cliffside Pocket Park, where you can find picnic areas and water fountains. You can also kayak, canoe, or go tubing on the Shenandoah River if you prefer to be on the water.

Below ground, residents can visit the famous Luray Caverns and see its spectacular geological formations on a guided tour through an expansive network of caves. It also offers the largest hedge maze in the Mid-Atlantic region, with its eight-foot-tall hedges, hidden tunnels, and a lookout tower. If you prefer to hang out closer to the sky than underground, you can check out nearby zipline adventures or drive up to one of many mountain overlooks in the area. Even the drive up to these overlooks is scenic–a favorite being Skyline Drive–and there are plenty of trail access points along the way, providing opportunities for natural beauty no matter where you’re headed.

Luray also offers options for golfers of all skill levels. The Caverns Country Club in Luray has an 18-hole course with views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. This course has a unique feature the club likes to call, “the cave hole,” where the caverns under Luray open up in one spot on the first fairway and tend to swallow golf balls into an unexcavated cave. The USGA made an official ruling that if this happens to your ball, you get a free drop, creating a fun and interesting trend of untraditional swings on No. 1 at the Caverns Country Club. Golfers of Luray can also drive out to the Shenandoah Valley Golf Club, which has two 18-hole courses and a highly regarded golf school.

Anglers will enjoy several options in Luray, like Lake Arrowhead, which has bass, catfish, and sunfish. The Shenandoah River, which flows through and past Luray, is so well known for its smallmouth bass that several local outfitters offer guided fishing trips. The area’s guided tours are not limited to fishermen. The starting point for a guided horseback trail ride through the Shenandoah National Park is just off Skyline Drive, and the Luray area has several stables and equestrian centers that offer horseback riding, lessons, and trail rides.

With all these outdoor destinations and more, Luray provides a great place to not only call home, but to be active and enjoy nature year-round.
