West Point, Virginia is known for its neighborly residents and strong sense of community, as well as its natural beauty provided by its location at the York River convergence of the Mattaponi and Pamunkey Rivers. Many of our communities in and around West Point come with amenities to enjoy, and all of our new construction homes offer spacious open floorplans and smart home technology.
Why choose West Point, Virginia
Located where the Mattaponi and Pamunkey Rivers form the York River, West Point, Virginia has thrived as a deep-water river port since the 1800s. The waterfront location also supports commercial fishing and recreational boating industries that contribute to the local economy, as does area farming and tourism. West Point residents enjoy fresh local produce at the seasonal farmers markets, nearby farm stands, and you-pick farms and berry patches, as well as vineyards and wineries.
The town’s historic district features restored buildings from the late 1800s and early 1900s, and you can find a wide variety of shopping and experiences there, from charming boutiques and antique stores to bookstores to produce shops and markets. In addition to entertainment, jobs, and conveniences located in West Point, urban conveniences, rural areas, and nearby smaller towns are all easily accessible thanks to Route 33 and I-64. Richmond, Virginia is less than 40 miles away, and Williamsburg is less than 30 miles away.
Community life in West Point, Virginia
West Point and the surrounding area host community events that bring neighbors together throughout the year. The West Point Crab Carnival, held each October since 1982 at the downtown waterfront district, serves as the town's signature festival. This family-friendly carnival features a parade, arts and crafts vendors, fireworks, live music and entertainment, and plenty of fresh local seafood. In addition to local seafood, the town supports local farms and vineyards through a variety of events and restaurants. West Point hosts a Farmers Market from mid-May through mid-September, where residents can socialize and shop for fresh produce and local goods. The town also organizes Food Trucks by the River events on various Friday evenings from spring through the fall, offering a variety of local food, live music, and scenic views for residents to enjoy.
Residents can also visit West Point farms and vineyards directly, at locations like Riverwatch Farm or Mattapony Reserve. Riverwatch Farm offers an interactive farm experience, where you can tour the farm, see their chickens, see a milking demonstration, or cuddle with and bottle feed their goats. They also have various farm-made products for sale. Mattapony Reserve is a vineyard, winery, restaurant, artifact museum, and local Native American artisan store located off the Mattaponi River at the Mattaponi Indian Reservation. They make and serve wine that is created sustainably using less water and pair it with food sourced from local farms. You can enjoy a glass of wine while seated overlooking the beautiful scenery of the vineyard and river, and thanks to nearby eagle nests, you may get to watch bald eagles flying by or fishing. In the summer, you might even catch the eagles teaching their young how to fly and fish right there at the vineyard.
Other highlights of summer in West Point include the free Jammin' on the Point concert series, sponsored by the West Point Chamber of Commerce, which runs from May through September, and the Annual Chesty Puller Memorial Twin Bridge 10K. The 10K, which happens each June, is named after a native of West Point and the most decorated United States Marine in history. Later in the year, West Point celebrates Christmas by transforming Main Street with holiday decorations and hosting a tree lighting ceremony and festive activities that are open for all to enjoy.
West Point also offers plenty of opportunities to connect with and support the community, from athletic programs to historical organizations. The Greater West Point Family YMCA serves West Point residents and improves the lives of people of all ages through a wide range of fitness programs and other activities. Likewise, the King William Parks and Recreation Department organizes sports leagues for kids and adults as well as pickleball, yoga and other exercise classes.
The West Point Ruritan Club organizes social events and fundraisers throughout the year, bringing neighbors together for community service, and the West Point Historical Society preserves the town's heritage with exhibits and educational programs at the West Point Museum. It has a collection of thousands of artifacts, including a bound collection of local newspapers from 1890 to the present.
With Richmond nearby, West Point residents can take advantage of events in the city as well. For example, they can attend concerts, lectures, and live theater at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and the University of Richmond. Other events include the Richmond Folk Festival, which attracts about 200,000 people for a three-day weekend celebration of music, crafts, and culture from the USA and around the world, and the Dominion Energy Riverrock festival, which offers three days of action sports competition and music.
Williamsburg is close by too, enabling West Point residents to enjoy the many festivals, events, and amenities available there. For instance, there’s the Ampersand International Arts Festival, which showcases films, music, theater, and dance programs, and often does not charge admission. West Point residents can also explore the centuries-old streets of Colonial Williamsburg, the world’s largest living history museum, or the walkable streets and brick sidewalks of Downtown Williamsburg with its many exciting boutiques, shops, cafes, and restaurants.
Outdoor fun in West Point, Virginia
West Point provides year-round outdoor recreation opportunities for residents and visitors alike, as the town's location at the confluence of the Pamunkey and Mattaponi rivers provides ample water-based activities, like kayaking, boating, walking along the river, or fishing.
West Point offers exceptional fishing for striped bass, largemouth bass, blue catfish, and white perch given its proximity to the Pamunkey, Mattaponi and York Rivers. The brackish water environment of the York River near West Point creates a diverse ecosystem where both freshwater and saltwater species thrive seasonally. Anglers particularly value this area for trophy striped bass during spring and fall migrations, while the deeper channels of the York River hold abundant catfish year-round. Local fishing guides and longtime residents recommend focusing on the river edges where tributaries meet the main channel, especially during tidal changes when fish activity increases significantly. Fishing is also popular at Glass Island Landing, which offers fresh and saltwater fishing, a boat ramp, and picnicking facilities.
For those who prefer to enjoy the water in other ways, West Point residents can access multiple kayak and canoe launch points, including Glass Island Landing—which has a kayak launch in addition to the boat ramp— and West Point Creek, so they can explore the Pamunkey, Mattaponi, and York Rivers. You can also take a walk, bike ride, or jog down the West Point Riverwalk Trail and enjoy views of the Mattaponi River and West Point Creek, while observing herons, ospreys, bald eagles, cranes, otters, muskrats, crabs, deer, and other wildlife.
Those who like to walk or hike can enjoy trails in nearby state forests. The Sandy Point State Forest, located in King William County and about 20 minutes away, offers about four miles of frontage on the Mattaponi River with plenty of wildlife-watching opportunities. In addition to hiking, this over 2,000 acre Forest also allows biking, horseback riding, fishing, non-motorized boating, and even hunting. The Zoar State Forest, a smaller forest about 30 minutes away, includes the Mattaponi Bluffs Nature and Herring Creek Loop Nature Trails and provides opportunities for hiking, biking, and fishing.
Golf enthusiasts have access to several courses in the area. The Country Club of West Point offers a 9-hole, par-36 course right in town. The Stonehouse Golf Club, about a 10-mile drive, is an 18-hole course near the York River, where wild turkeys and deer may venture into the greens. Brickshire Golf Club, about a 15-mile drive, is a Curtis Strange co-designed course that accommodates various skill levels while showcasing the natural landscape.
West Point residents can also make use of additional recreation areas in the greater Richmond area, including the James River Park System and the Machicomoco State Park, about a 30-mile drive, which has trails along the York River and the Chesapeake Bay. There are also many opportunities to enjoy horseback riding in the surrounding countryside, with many nearby locations, like Fox Pointe Farm, offering lessons, clinics, camps, and trail rides.
