History

Union Grove was founded in 1838 by its first settler, John E. Dunham, who purchased 80 acres and built the first home and barn. The first schoolhouse, Union School, was built in 1846 and combined several outlying school districts. The village received its name from Governor Dodge, who combined the school’s name, “Union School,” with “grove” for the grove of burr oak trees in town.
