It has plenty of great, local amenities, including fun outdoor activities and cool downtown shops. It’s a town that holds onto its roots while embracing opportunities for growth, making it a hidden gem for those looking to experience the charm of rural North Carolina.

Community life in Farmville, NC
Known for its small-town charm and connected community, Farmville prides itself on its welcoming culture and local flair. Once a finalist in the National Civic League’s All-America City Award competition, Farmville is known for fostering collaboration and innovation to best serve its residents and community. Dedicated to encouraging its legacy as the “friendliest little town in the state,” the town hosts regular events to bring residents together, support the local economy, and have a great time.
The Dogwood Festival, held each April, is one of the most popular annual events in Farmville. Recognized by the Library of Congress as a legacy festival, a designation honoring events and traditions of historical or cultural importance with the goal of promoting them for future generations, The Dogwood Festival has been an important part of Farmville and the eastern North Carolina area for more than 35 years. The four-day festival is held on the town commons among the beautiful blooms from dogwoods, annuals, perennials, and azaleas. The schedule includes concerts, rides, a movie night, a show from the ProTown BMX Stunt Team, and more, though one of the highlights of the festival is undoubtedly the arts and crafts pavilion at the center of the commons, where local artists and artisans display their talent and craftsmanship.
Apart from the Dogwood Festival, the town hosts several other annual events to bring residents together to celebrate and enjoy the area. Holidays are a staple for celebration and community for the town. Farmville hosts an annual Easter Egg hunt for families, and the Easter Bunny stops by to visit with the area’s children. The Independence Day Celebration is also popular, as locals get together on the Town Common to enjoy food, ice cream, patriotic music played by local bands, and of course, an impressive fireworks display. The town celebrates Halloween with more than your typical treat-or-treat fun, though there is plenty of that too. The Ghost Walk takes residents on a spooky tour of their hometown and includes scary stories through encounters with spirits along the trail—historical accuracy is not guaranteed. As the year comes to a close, the town hosts multiple holiday events, including the Christmas Parade and the popular Taste of Farmville Christmas. For over 20 years, A Taste of Farmville has been a highlight of the area’s holiday season. The event features carriage rides, a tree lighting, picture and story time with Santa, and Christmas trees and greens for sale.
There is no need to wait for a holiday to enjoy an event in Farmville; the town hosts regular gatherings that facilitate community and connect folks with similar interests. The Third Friday Art Walk—held, as the name suggests, on the third Friday of every month—features art exhibits and demonstrations throughout the downtown area. Both the ECU Glass Station and the Pitt Community College Ceramic Studio participate, and those interested in more than just watching demonstrations can come by during one of the studios’ public workshops. Though it isn’t featured in the Third Friday Art Walk, the North Carolina Furniture School provides another opportunity for residents to engage in a cool hobby. They offer woodworking and furniture making classes for all skill levels, and while they do have a full curriculum for full-time study, they also offer classes for hobbyists and private instruction.
Those looking for engaging entertainment have plenty of options in Farmville too. The Paramount Theatre on Main Street has been home to a variety of entertainment options since it opened as a traditional movie theater in the 1920s. Now home to the Farmville Arts Council, the theater hosts a variety of performances: plays, musicals, visual art shows, symphonies, rock concerts, the occasional seasonal movie, and everything in between. Even Santa stops by around the holiday season to check out what’s happening at the theater and to hear the Christmas wishes of Farmville children.
History buffs have options in Farmville too. The May Museum is located in a historic home from the 1850s. Its collection includes period furniture, glassware, farm implements, and documents ranging from personal correspondence of the May family to legal records and genealogical information. If the history isn’t of interest, the museum also plans events for the town. During the summer months at the museum, you might find live music by a local band, craft vendors, food trucks, or beer and wine available.
Though there is plenty to do in Farmville, Greenville, less than 15 miles away, provides additional options and more urban amenities. With a theater, the Greenville Museum of Art, and the highly anticipated Greenville Pirate Festival, residents have choices for entertainment and events both in Farmville and nearby towns.
Outdoor fun in Farmville, NC
Farmville’s dedication to connectedness extends to its outdoor programming. The Parks and Recreation department offers a wide variety of sports for all ages. There’s T-ball, baseball, softball, soccer, basketball, both flag and tackle football, cheerleading, basketball, and even kickball. With so many options in both the spring and fall, it’s easy to get in the game. Adults hoping for something less competitive have options too; the department offers zumba and a Farmville Moves class, a six-week program to get in shape. While the class promotes preparation for the Town of Farmville’s annual 5k and Fun Run, the focus is getting active. Coaches and wellness professionals help all age groups and fitness levels build healthy habits that will serve them well past the annual run. The department also sponsors classes and programs for the area’s seniors, including yoga, line dancing, and a senior fitness class.
There are plenty of opportunities to get outside beyond sports and fitness classes. Farmville has several parks and trails in town. J.Y. Monk Park offers a variety of recreational activities and is a great choice for family outings. With covered picnic areas, there are places to sit down with a PB&J before sending the kids off to play at any of the pieces of playground equipment, the swings, or for older kids and adults, the pickleball courts or sand volleyball courts. The park also features a story broken up into shorter sections and posted along the trail—a story walk—which families can enjoy at their own pace. There is additional fun just across the street at the community splash pad. With several fun water features ranging from automatically-dumping buckets of water to a fountain that weaves water into patterns, the splash pad is a popular spot for water fun in the summer months.
Residents hoping for a little more natural shade can find it at the Farmville Disc Golf Park. The 18-hole course offers separate tees for beginner and intermediate players and winds through wooded areas, open fields, and a variety of terrain. It’s a beautiful place to play, and residents have options for more leisurely enjoyment of the park. For example, the park features a catch and release fishing pond and a 2.2 mile nature trail that follows the nearby creek.
Those looking for a stroll through town have some great options as well. While it’s certainly possible to walk the streets downtown and take in the historic architecture on your own, residents and tourists alike enjoy following Farmville’s Art Trail loop through downtown. The trail is a 1.2 mile loop that showcases the public art installations and murals throughout the area. Each stop has a QR code posted nearby with links to audio recordings of the artists and local experts sharing the history and background of each piece.
While there are plenty of outdoor activities in town, those looking to disconnect and immerse themselves in nature’s beauty can easily do so. It’s about an hour drive to Medoc Mountain State Park, which features tent and group campsites, Trailer and RV sites, and equestrian campsites. The park features 29 miles of trails for hiking, 9 miles for biking, and 10 miles for horseback riding. Those looking to fish can do so at Little Fishing Creek.
With so many options both in and around town, it’s easy to get outside and get active in Farmville.
