Outdoor fun in Chambersburg, PA

There are plenty of outdoor recreation options in Chambersburg, PA. The town offers some beautiful escapes to nature as well as numerous ways to play games and get active.

Memorial Park, frequently the site of community gatherings, is one of the town’s most popular locations for outdoor fun. With over 35 acres, the park features two play areas: a playground for children 5 years and older and another for toddlers and preschoolers; a basketball court; multiple tennis courts; and a bandstand for concerts. There is also plenty of green space, ideal for a pick-up game of soccer or for relaxing beneath the shade of one of the park’s mature trees. If exercise is your goal, there’s nearly a mile of paths through the park, perfect for getting your steps in, or the Chambersburg Aquatic Center, open in the summer, for your laps, or simply to cool off. The aquatic center also offers plenty of water activities beyond the pool, including a lazy river, water slides, and a spray ground.

Norlo Park, just outside of town, is another excellent option for outdoor play. The park features a horseshoe pit, plenty of green space for soccer games or a lively game of tag, and a dog park with designated areas for larger and smaller furry friends. The Conococheague Audubon’s Native Plants Garden is also located in the park, providing a space of peace and beauty to enjoy. There is also a little bit of history to enjoy at the park: a restored railway station and rail cars.

The Cumberland Valley Rail Trail provides a great way to exercise and travel around town and the surrounding area. The 13-mile multi-use rail trail follows the abandoned Cumberland Valley Railroad corridor and connects towns, parks, and natural areas. The Chambersburg section includes trails through natural beauty, crosses the Conococheague Creek, and connects various areas of the community, including the Chambersburg Bike Park, which features a pump track and jump track. The trail is a great way to enjoy the area, get your steps in, or get from one place to another without moving your car.

About 20 minutes outside of town, you can check out the Michaux State Forest. The forest area encompasses 85,500 acres in South Mountain and offers plenty of activities. Enjoy a ride on an ATV, take your horse out for a ride, go for a hike, cast a line and go fishing, or get your adrenaline pumping while going mountain biking. In the winter, you can cross-country ski or take out the snowmobile. The area is also home to history. Known as the state’s “Cradle of Forestry,” Michaux State Forest is also home to the site of the first forestry school, Mont Alto.
