Chesterfield and the surrounding areas host a wide variety of community events throughout the year. The Chesterfield County Fair, established in 1911, runs annually in August. The fair is one of the most popular annual events in the county, drawing a crowd of over 50,000 attendees. It features carnival rides; fair food like turkey legs and funnel cakes; games, local vendors, entertainment like art, music, and dancing, and competitions. These competitions range from art to agriculture, with a special emphasis on poultry and competitive horseback riding. Other agricultural events, like the rodeo and pig races, are popular choices of entertainment at the fair.
In the fall, residents can visit ChesterFest, an annual fall festival 5 miles outside of town. As a celebration of local food, artisans, and artists, you’ll find plenty of food, crafts, and music at this festival. There are special activities for kids, like a pumpkin patch and bounce houses, and the adults can enjoy the festival’s Beer Garden which sells locally brewed beer and mead.
For more long-term entertainment with flexible dates, you can check out cultural activities, like museums, or visit a play or concert at one of Chesterfield’s unique venues. The Chesterfield Historical Society operates the Chesterfield Museum and several historic properties, including Magnolia Grange House Museum, a historic mansion built in 1822 that offers tours led by trained docents and features elaborate ceiling motifs, a half-turn open carved stairway, and hand-painted scenic wallpaper. Swift Creek Mill Theatre presents plays and music in a former grist mill, built around 1850, and is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. For outdoor shows, Pocahontas Premieres is an annual concert series at Pocahontas State Park’s Heritage Amphitheater. The music in these concert series has no limit of genre, with past concerts showcasing anything from modern country to classic rock.
The county also has a traditional agricultural presence, which shows in existing farms like Swift Creek Berry Farm and Gallmeyer Farms, which offer pick-your-own opportunities for strawberries, pumpkins, and other seasonal produce that connect residents directly with local food sources. If you’d rather visit a market than an actual farm, residents can attend the Chesterfield County Farmers Market from May through September or visit the nearby Brandermill Farmers Market. Both markets offer locally grown fruits and vegetables, locally-raised meats and eggs, and a diverse selection of homemade goods like salsas, soaps, or art.

Outdoor fun in Chesterfield, VA
Chesterfield places high importance on the outdoors and has too many local parks to list, with over 50 parks and 25 trail systems managed by the Chesterfield Department of Parks and Recreation. Additionally, Chesterfield is home to multiple state parks and conservation areas where residents can hike, bike, paddle, fish, and more.
One of the most popular state parks in Virginia–as well as the largest one at 7,950 acres–is Pocahontas State Park, located in Chesterfield, VA. This park contains more than 60 miles of trails for hiking that range from easy to moderate difficulty. Thanks to the extensive trail system, visitors can choose the type of scenery they’d like to explore, from forested to lakeside hikes. Some trails allow hiking, biking, and horseback riding on the same path, but others are designated specifically for hikers or usage with bikes or horses. The park has several designated trails for mountain biking and horseback riding, more than 13 miles of which are dedicated for horseback riding through wooded terrain.
Chesterfield is also home to several conservation areas, including the Dutch Gap Conservation Area. This area features a trail system that’s open for hiking, biking, walking, running, and horseback riding, and features boardwalks over wetlands, views of the James River, and a lagoon water trail to explore by kayak or canoe. Visitors can also schedule a private three-hour kayak or canoe tour, go bird watching, or go fishing for freshwater fish via one of Dutch Gap’s 5 docks along the river trail. Other amenities include an observation blind, picnic shelters, and restrooms. Similarly, John J. Radcliffe Conservation Area in Chesterfield is a 97-acre woods and swamp area full of wildlife, which provides opportunities for fishing, hiking, picnicking, or paddling from the canoe launch.
With Chesterfield County’s north and south borders of the James River and Appomattox River, as well as numerous lakes and streams throughout the area, there’s no shortage of fishing in Chesterfield. R. Garland Dodd Park spans 176 acres along the Appomattox River, with a trail system that features river views and historical sites. While this park is popular for its athletic fields and courts, it’s also a popular spot for fishing. It includes boardwalks through wetland areas and multiple fishing access points. Dorey Park is a similar location that is another popular choice for nearby fishing, with several interconnected woodland trails, including about five miles designed for horseback riding, as well as ball fields, a disc golf course, and a pond stocked with trout.
If large bodies of water are more your style than ponds and streams, the Swift Creek Reservoir spans 1,700 acres for fishing for largemouth bass and several different types of catfish, and boating. Lake Chesdin, formed by the Appomattox River, is approximately 20 miles west of Chesterfield. The lake provides 3,100 acres for boating and fishing for bass, bluegill, sunfish, crappie, white perch, walleye, and different species of catfish. The James River flows along Chesterfield's northern border with multiple access points, including Robious Landing Park, where residents can catch smallmouth and largemouth bass, striped bass, catfish, shad, bowfin, walleye, and longnose gar.
Golfers have several choices in the area as well. Lake Chesdin Golf Club in Chesterfield is adjacent to Lake Chesdin. The club is open to members and non-members. The Golf Club at the Highlands, also in Chesterfield, is an 18-hole public golf course designed by Lester George that opened in 1994. The Birkdale Golf Club in Midlothian is about 12 miles away. The club is also open to members and non-members, and the course has been renovated twice since opening in 1990. Independence Golf Club in Midlothian, about a 22-mile drive, has been recognized by Golf Digest as a top course. The club features two courses: an 18-hole championship course and a 9-hole course for traditional golf, footgolf, and disc golf.
