Music lovers of the community enjoy the Harbor Blast Concert Series along the Appomattox River from spring through fall each year, with hosted bands ranging from reggae to rock. There are sometimes festivals, as well, where Harbor Blast will bring in numerous bands from one genre to perform all day long. In the past, they have held metal fests, reggae fests, rock fests, and more, all with the goal of having fun, creating a positive community atmosphere, and honoring and supporting local musicians.

Prince George supports local farmers and producers, especially those who practice sustainability, through an annual farmers’ market that runs each Saturday from May through September. They also sometimes offer a one-time holiday market near the end of the year. Prince George’s Farmer’s Market also provides options for purchasing using SNAP/EBT at the market and a program for seniors that provides growing season vouchers for low-income residents aged 60 or older.

For more locally produced food and drink, residents can visit the annual Appomattox River Wine Festival in Prince George. This festival occurs each spring on the banks of the river and operates similarly to a farmer’s market, with local vendors offering wine by the glass or selling by the bottle and many local vendors offering food. There is also live music at the festival, and visitors are encouraged to bring a blanket or lawn chair to drink wine by the river and hang out for a while.

Residents can also enjoy the Richard Bland College Pecan Festival each October in nearby Petersburg, featuring local vendors, live music, and activities for all ages, set among one of Virginia's largest pecan groves. In addition to Richard Bland College, which is associated with the College of William & Mary, Virginia State University, also in Petersburg, produces events ranging from athletics to the performing arts that are open to the general public.

Proximity to Richmond also enables Prince George residents to attend events in the city. For example, in October, the Richmond Folk Festival attracts approximately 200,000 people for a three-day weekend celebration of music, crafts, and culture from the USA and around the world. Each May, the Dominion Energy Riverrock festival delivers three days of action sports competition and music. Independent film enthusiasts attend the Richmond International Film Festival each year to see movies from around the globe that don’t receive wide distribution.

Outdoor fun in Prince George, VA

Area residents can get outdoors and connect with nature in their community in a variety of ways, thanks to several nearby parks and wildlife areas. The Prince George County Parks and Recreation Department promotes healthy lifestyles through classes and activities, community events, sports leagues, and recreational and exercise programs for all ages. The department also maintains facilities such as swimming pools, gyms, ball fields, parks, walking trails, kayak rentals, and even disc golf courses for residents to enjoy.

For example, the 60-acre Scott Memorial Park in Prince George features a large pavilion and picnic areas, restrooms, a playground, two baseball/softball fields, and five soccer fields. This park is also home to Pine Valley at Scott Park, which is an 18-hole disc golf course that travels through both wide open areas and wooded areas. Disc golfers must provide their own discs to play, but they can be rented from Prince George County Library for free with a regional library card.

Other opportunities for outdoor fun in Prince George include the JEJ Moore Athletic Complex, which covers 52 acres with four baseball/softball fields, a soccer field, concession area, and restrooms. Additionally, the Prince George Central Wellness Center hosts indoor facilities for activities and sports, including basketball leagues and pickleball.

Plenty of additional outdoor activities can be found within 15 miles or less of Prince George. Temple Recreation Park, about a 10-mile drive, provides pavilions, picnic tables, restrooms, a walking and running trail, tennis courts, a pickleball court, a softball field, and a basketball court on 32 acres. For less manicured outdoor fun, residents can visit trails, forests, and parks located along the rivers, like the James River National Wildlife Refuge.

The James River National Wildlife Refuge, a 12-mile ride from Prince George, offers a short trail where visitors can observe bald eagles and other wildlife on 4,800 acres of forests and wetlands. Fishing is permitted in the refuge — bass, perch, shiners, shad, sunfish, and catfish are the most common catches. Visitors can also explore the refuge by canoe or kayak by following a marked paddle trail. Guided walking and paddling tours organized by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service are available during the spring and fall, providing visitors with greater insight into the refuge.

The Appomattox River Regional Park, about nine miles away, is on more than 65 acres of woodland. It offers scenic hiking trails, a fishing pier, birdwatching opportunities, picnic pavilions, and a canoe/kayak launch to the Appomattox River. A ways down the river, you can also enjoy the Hopewell Riverwalk, a long boardwalk that follows the edge of the Appomattox River.

Several other trails throughout the area provide a variety of scenery and opportunities for hiking, biking, viewing wildlife, or horseback riding. The James River Heritage Trail, accessible near Hopewell and about an eight-mile drive from Prince George, provides views along the river. A series of short trails loops through Pamplin Historical Park’s 424 acres, which features museums, antebellum homes, and other sites. The trails at Fort Gregg-Adams, a US Army post in Prince George County, include a moderate 3.2-mile loop. Fort Gregg-Adams includes a variety of other public activities, as well, such as paintball, archery, hunting, skeet shooting, kayaking, fishing, and more. Prince George also has an adventure park, equipped with obstacle courses, zip lines, and nature trails, in a thick forest.

Fishing enthusiasts can cast a line in several area rivers, creeks, and lakes. In addition to the Appomattox River and the James River National Wildlife Refuge, there are many other spots along the James River and Powell Creek to catch a variety of bass, catfish, and other freshwater species. Old City Point Waterfront Park, about 9 miles from Prince George, overlooks the James River and has a pier for fishing–no boat needed. Lake Chesdin, a reservoir about a 25-mile drive west, is known for its largemouth bass and crappie fishing

Golf enthusiasts have plenty of courses in the area, as well. The Cardinal Golf Club at Fort Gregg-Adams, less than seven miles away, is a 27-hole championship course open to the general public. The three nines follow the gentle, rolling hill terrain, and they can be combined in a variety of ways to create an easier or more challenging play. Another option is Dogwood Trace Golf Course, a municipal 18-hole, par-72 golf course in Petersburg, Virginia, which is about a 12-mile drive from Prince George.

For residents considering horseback riding, stables in the Petersburg area, roughly a 15-mile drive south, offer lessons, horse boarding, indoor riding arenas, and trail rides.
