Enjoying the great outdoors in Snow Camp, NC
Snow Camp’s rural environment makes for great outdoor activities of all kinds, with a river, parks, woods, and even a small, untouched mountain range. Whether you prefer a peaceful day of fishing or an active hike, Snow Camp has somewhere you can enjoy the great outdoors.
The Haw River is an area favorite for being on the water. It flows for nearly 110 miles total, and North Carolina has established a multi-use land and paddle trail on and next to the river, known as the Haw River Trail. This trail has a planned overall length of 80 miles, with 40 miles passing through Snow Camp’s home of Alamance County. The final Haw River Trail will extend from the Haw River State Park through Alamance County and will finish at the Jordan Lake State Recreational Area, offering an abundance of opportunities for hiking, paddling, fishing, and exploring throughout the region. If you’re bringing a fishing rod along with you, you can expect to see bass, sunfish, and bluegill nibbling at your line. Paddling is a river favorite, as the Haw River creates a diverse paddling experience depending on location and water level. Shallow, rocky sections of the river become whitewater rapids when water levels are normal, while other sections of the river offer a lake-like flat water environment due to historic dams from old mills. There are about 15 paddle access points in Alamance County. If you prefer to enter in a flat water zone, the Saxapahaw Lake Paddle Access point is a great place to go, just 12 minutes from Snow Camp.
The Saxapahaw Lake Paddle Access area is also right off the 30-acre Saxapahaw Island Park, which is a joy in itself, offering much more than Haw River access. The park also has walking trails and a meadow, but its main attraction is a giant wooden fish built around a slide on the playground. The fish is 45 feet long, 10 feet tall, eight feet wide, and weighs six tons. You climb inside to get to the top of the slide, which shoots you out of the fish’s mouth. The playground also includes a rope climbing play area shaped like a spider web, a swing set, and a fort-building activity station.
Cedarock Park, located just over 15 mins from Snow Camp, is another popular outdoor attraction close to home. Cedarock Park is a 500-acre nature park created from a historic farm from the 1800s, which has been restored and can be visited on the park grounds. The park features four miles of hiking trails, six miles of trails suitable for horseback riding, two disc golf courses with 36 holes total, a waterfall that rushes over an old mill dam, picnic areas, a basketball court, a volleyball court, a playground, camping areas, and open green space. There is also a pond and creek that are suitable for fishing, canoeing, and kayaking, with canoes and kayaks available for rent. A unique feature of Cedarock Park is their footgolf course, which is a combination of golf and soccer.
If you’re looking for a more secluded outdoor spot, you can check out the Cane Creek Mountains Natural Area, located right in Snow Camp. The Cane Creek Mountains are a small mountain range that stretches across multiple counties in the area, including Alamance County, and the highest point sits in Snow Camp, NC at 987 feet. The Pine Hill Trailhead and Oak Hill Trailhead are the two main entry points for hiking, each with the ability to branch out and extend your hike into several other trails. You can also access wildlife observation areas and a large lookout tower from these trailheads. The tower extends above the tree line, allowing visitors to climb 80 feet up and get a gorgeous bird’s-eye view of the forested hills. On the ground, you can keep your eyes peeled for a variety of species of plants and animals that thrive in the untouched mountain range, like a large natural population of ferns that favor the rain-soaked crevices of the rocks. At least eight species of ferns exist naturally in the Cane Creek Mountains. Wild blueberries are also prevalent throughout the mountains–and North Carolina in general–and attract the Southeastern Blueberry Bee. This little bee is unique and considered to be the most efficient pollinator in the south, pollinating blueberry plants by vibrating the flower to release the pollen in a process called, “buzz pollination.” You may also notice some other interesting critters in Cane Creek Mountains, like the red and black Scarlet Tanager songbird, the nonvenomous Green Snake, and the adorable long-tailed weasel. The county is working to double the size of the original 500 acres of protected natural area, and they will be adding more trails, observation areas, and facilities in doing so.
