From festivals to cook-offs to family movie nights, it’s easy to become connected in this tight-knit community. Celebrations and events in Sulphur Springs, TX
Sulphur Springs, Texas is a connected community centered around their historic downtown square, known as “Celebration Plaza.” The plaza is home to various restaurants, boutiques, entertainment, and monuments, like a Veterans Memorial with the names of veterans from or buried in Hopkins County and a splash pad featuring a large Texas star. The wide range of local businesses and community hangout spots is reason enough to love this spot downtown, but Celebration Plaza gets its name from the community’s love for the more than 300 events hosted annually in the square. From markets to food to fireworks, there’s something for everyone to enjoy in the plaza.
Celebration Market is one of the most popular events held in Celebration Plaza. Operating May through September, the Celebration Market features plenty of locally grown fruits and vegetables; handmade arts, crafts, and goodies; and kid-friendly activities. Long-running events like the market are common in Sulphur Springs, with regularly occurring movie nights, concerts, and more, but the town’s shorter annual traditions make just as much of an impact.
The Independence Day Celebration on the Plaza is a beloved tradition, especially with Sulphur Springs’ dedication to honoring our veterans and demonstrating pride in our country. The celebration includes a large picnic on the lawn with a concert from the Northeast Symphony Orchestra, and families gather to enjoy the camaraderie and music with lawn chairs and picnic blankets. After dark, the town lights up the sky with an impressive fireworks display.
The year-end holiday season is just as popular and kicks off with the month-long Hopkins County Fall Festival in October. The festival features a hay bale art contest with creative displays, a fall parade through the town that features community groups and first responders, a Fall Festival Carnival with rides and games galore, and a Creative Arts Contest and Local Vendor Exhibition Show. When December rolls around, Sulphur Springs celebrates Christmas with events downtown and a Christmas parade. Residents come together to enjoy the season and light the town Christmas tree at Celebration Plaza, and there are kids’ activities and specials from local businesses to enjoy.
Of course, with over 300 events each year, the area offers annual celebrations that are not tied to holidays, as well. The Hopkins County Dairy Festival, for example, celebrates the county’s heritage and top agricultural enterprise. With a 5k race, hot air balloons, hand milking contest, pageant for the title of Hopkins County Dairy Festival Queen, and perhaps most popular, the homemade ice cream contest, there is plenty to do and enjoy. The town also hosts the Lone Star Heritage Quilt Show, which features vendors and beautiful quilting displays; the Annual Heritage Car Show, featuring cars model year 1987 and older with cash prizes; and the Cattlemen's Classic and Ribeye Roundup, which features a steak cook-off, trade show, live music, and educational demonstrations.

The Southwest Dairy Museum showcases milk production and processing procedures and offers educational exhibits and hands-on activities. The museum also offers ice cream treats at its old-fashioned malt shop, The Creamery. Another great interactive museum in the area is the Hopkins County Museum and Heritage Park. Housed in historic buildings, including one built with distinctive features in 1910, the museum houses a range of artifacts from the area, including Caddo Indian relics, historic women’s apparel, antique toys, and more. Heritage Park, part of the museum, is 11 acres of immersive history with historical buildings intended to provide insights into small-town Texas history. The library in Sulphur Springs is another unique cultural destination, offering a few local art and history exhibits in addition to its books. You can find artwork by Thomas Kincaide, Jo Ann Durham, and Edward Sotello, but the library’s prize exhibits are the Sinclair World War II collection and the Leo St. Clair Music Box collection. The music box collection is one of the largest of its kind and includes a range of music boxes from all over the world, from antique designs to the more commonplace. One of the most interesting pieces in the collection was presented to Leo St. Clair by the Queen of Belgium while he served in the military. The Sinclair WWII collection features memorabilia from the T-Patchers, a Texas National Guard unit, and women who went to work to support the war effort. Primarily composed of personal documents and history from local residents Buddy and Katy Sinclair, the exhibit focuses on the contributions of ordinary folks in extraordinary times.
If you’re more interested in live performances, the Northeast Symphony Orchestra, supported by the Sulphur Springs Symphony League, provides regular Chamber concerts, a children’s concert, and educational programs throughout the year. You can also catch them performing at some local events, like the July 4th celebration at the plaza. Likewise, Community Player Main Street Theatre is a group of volunteer actors and actresses who produce five to six shows per year across a variety of genres. There are multiple performances of each production, so you never have to miss a show.
